@weirdnetwork Not sure if there’s going to be another franchise round, but it’s possible that one could be on the cards. STV and UTV’s licences for example, are both said to be expiring within the next few years, around 2013 or 2014. If there’s no franchise round, I guess the only way to opt out of a bidding war is to renew the licences without a contest. They’ve done that before several years ago. I wouldn’t be surprised if they do it again.
@steve02045 I agree, although I’d keep Yorkshire and Meridian as they only produced mainly local stuff. Granada should have lost their contract in 1991 as we would have by now had NWT. Had Thames continued my first guess would have seen both them and LWT merge creating a super London franchise.

Ofcom should call for another franchise round for ITV, that way Granada and Carlton could be automatically disqualified on poor production same for GMTV. Then North West TV and Thames could then takeover along with the retun of TV-AM.
Thames, TVS and others left a lot of soul behind, and its the reason why we missed them – they closed at their peak. I reckon the ITV companies foresaw that Sky’s multi-channel TV was just around the corner, meaning that advertising revenue would spread across the new TV licences the ITC was dishing out and ITV companies were starting to see less money. LWT looked to be screwed from the start of 1993, when Granada took a hold of it in 1994. The people in charge made their career out of it anyway
Quality didnt win on this occasion as can be seen by ITV 1 today. This simply stems back to the incompetent way the IBA awarded licences in the 1980 round. Southern, Westward and ATV were replaced by TVS, TSW and in came TV-am as the breakfast licence holder. Ironic that TVS , TSW and TV-am were given their marching orders some 10 years later. The whole concept of ITV is finished there are no regions and no good programmes lost due to companies being merged at least Ulster and Channel TV survive
The viewers were never going to win. Even if the companies had good proposals, they were never going to be able to carry them out due to the obscene amounts they had to pay to the government. This is as much a reason for the dramtic downfall in quality on ITV as the loss of decent companies like Thames and TV-am.
I agree with you on all points. Granada would have to go as it has been tainted by Carlton and will continue its ways. I couldnt believe it when Thames went and LWT. Local franchises across the UK made TV something to be proud of and so many sat at watched it because each region gave uniques varieties. Now its full of cheap reality Sh*t with the odd program worth watching. We should rally against ITC/Carlton and restore our beloved ITV. I cant help thinking Murdoch has a hand in this (SKY SALES)
Not as bad as them because:
a) they went nearly 40 years without even trying to take over another company (and never appealed to the IBA to do so).
b) they made good programmes.
ITV first started as regional tv. They had a duty to inform and entertain us. That has sadly been lacking in the years after carlton got the hands on the lucrative london weekday franchise in january 1993. Carlton went on a takeover spree aided and abetted by granada. They merged and formed itv1. They got rid of all regional identity, scrapped religious programming, farted about with news at ten and ended childrens tv. Granada are just as bad as carlton.
I wouldn’t blame Granada for that. they just copied Carlton.
Id just renew Granada as they made some of ITV’s biggest hits over the years.
Had it occured to you that it is possible that Carlton could have lied to their viewers?
Even though they always scheduled their crap in peak time viewing, some of their best programmes (excluding daytime crap) were scheduled in out-of-peak hours. I remember them producing some of CITVs top-rating programmes of the 90s.

ALL itv franchises should be revoked and a new set of itv companies should be given the chance to broadcast. I would be ecstatic if granada and carlton lose their right broadcast. They have destroyed ITV. and they should be punished. In the news article the itc chairman said that the winners are the viewers. That is absolute bull. ITV is crap at the moment it is getting worse!!!!
In 2008 there’s gonna be another franchise round. However like in 1999, it will most likely be another internal round where the current license simply pay a small fortune to keep their licenses for another 10 years. And even if it is an external one where anyone can put in an offer, I can’t see anyone wanting to. With so many TV channels available now, it’s too risky plus a company could simply set up their own channel on Sky or Virgin.
A couple of days ago, I learned on Newsnight that ITV is slashing it’s regional news programme output. Very soon, ITV will be stripped of any regional and individual identity that was once the core of this network. It is heading for total oblivion because ITV no longer cares about the source that puts them in business in the first place – the viewers. Mike S.
The National Teletext franchise didn’t take place until mid-1992, as the Government were having different ideas for ITV/C4 Teletext such as selling it off to private companies. Oracle challenged this and then the ITC held a Franchise round of which Teletext Ltd won.

Is ITV still regionalised cause apart from the local news I see no region only programmes?
@steve02045 When you say ALL do you mean UTV/STV/Channel as well?
ITV Wales says they can nolonger produce the ITV Wales news as they are virtually no money left, according to BBC Wales Today.
Instead 3 companies are bidding and the panel will select one to make the news instead.
Apparently: ITN, UTV (with another consortium) and Tinopolis are candidates bidding.
Ofcom should call for another franchise round for ITV, that way Granada and Carlton could be automatically disqualified on poor production same for GMTV. Then North West TV and Thames could then takeover along with the retun of TV-AM.
I wonder if they will do another franchise bidding war? If so, could thames re-bid?

how long before ITV goes under
oh god it’s dire
If that is true, then I call upon FremantleMedia to put in your bid and bring Thames back into the ITV fold. Mike S.
why do these news reports never mention that ORACLE lost as well?
and Sunrise
